Cardiac Myocyte Size in Rats With Aortocaval Fistulas 1. Developing and Established Hypertrophy

چکیده
The effects of a large arteriovenous fistula on left and right ventricular hemodynamics and cardiac myocyte size were examined in adult rats at 1 week and 1 month after surgery. Cardiac output, left ventricular function, and right ventricular function were evaluated before obtaining isolated myocytes for cell size measurements. Average heart weight increased 35% at 1 week and 86% at 1 month in rats with fistulas. In general, myocyte hypertrophy was due to a proportional increase in length and width (length/width ratio remained constant). This change was more evident in the large hearts from rats with 1-month fistulas. At both the 1-week and 1-month intervals, the hypertrophic response of right ventricular myocytes was slightly greater than that observed in the left ventricle or interventricular septum. Left ventricular systolic pressure and dP/dtmax were significantly reduced at 1 week but returned to normal after 1 month of overloading. Left ventricular end-diastolic pressure was increased approximately fivefold and twofold at 1 week and 1 month, respectively. Right ventricular systolic pressure and dP/dtmax were increased at both intervals examined. We conclude that severe volume overloading from

متن کاملLow coronary perfusion pressure is associated with endocardial fibrosis in a rat model of volume overload cardiac hypertrophy.
UNLABELLED Left ventricular hypertrophy following volume overload is regarded as an example of cardiac remodeling without increased fibrosis accumulation. However, infarction is associated with increased fibrosis within the noninfarcted, hypertrophied myocardium, particularly in the subendocardial regions. It is conceivable to suppose that, as also occurs postinfarction, low coronary driving pr...
متن کاملCharacterization of cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure due to volume overload in the rat.
Alterations in general characteristics and morphology of the heart, as well as changes in hemodynamics, myosin heavy chain isoforms, and beta-adrenoceptor responsiveness, were determined in Sprague-Dawley rats at 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 wk after aortocaval fistula (shunt) was induced by the needle technique. Three stages of cardiac hypertrophy due to volume overload were recognized during the 16-wk ...

Gross and ultrastructural changes occurring in the left ventricle in response to chronic volume overload were studied in dogs. One group of dogs was examined 28-43 days after an aortocaval fistula had been created; congestive heart failure had developed at the time of the examination. Two other groups of dogs were investigated 78 ± 17 (SD) days and 178 ± 4 days after similar fistulas had been c...
